Emily Carr University of Art + Design Honorary Doctor of Letters

On May 10, 2023 artist, curator and arts organizer Paul Wong was awarded an honorary degrees during the Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s May Convocation ceremony for recognition of their notable achievements.

Additionally, Glenn Lewis also received an honorary degree. The 2023 Emily Award was presented to visual artist Zadie Xa, who graduated from ECU in 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

“It’s my great pleasure to bestow this year’s Honorary Degrees and Emily Award on these three outstanding artists,” says ECU President + Vice-Chancellor Gillian Siddall.

“Each of them has dedicated their practice to revealing and honouring invisible communities, traditions and histories. They are exemplary practitioners whose commitment and depth continue to expand the limits of what is possible within their respective disciplines and beyond. We are all richer for their contributions to the arts.”

Each year the Honorary Degree Program celebrates and recognizes the commitment, dedication, and service of individuals who are distinguished by their significant contributions and sustained creative and philanthropic achievements in their areas of expertise. Honorary degrees are awarded to individuals who are widely recognized for outstanding and sustained creative and philanthropic achievements in their areas of expertise. In some instances, honorary degrees will be awarded for meritorious service to education or to the university where this service has brought distinction and honour to the university.
