Diaolou (fortified watchtowers) and yanglou (Western-style mansions) built in the 19th and 20th centuries by returning emigrants. These architectural marvels fuse classical Western and traditional Chinese elements, originally built to protect from bandits these grand arcade-style buildings were erected by Chinese working overseas for their families that remained living in China.  This series was shot in Thai Gung Lay Village and includes a view from the diaolou  built by Paul’s grandfather who worked building the railway in Canada in the late 1800s.
