Chinese Cafes: The Five Energies
Paul Wong, 1997
series of 5 silkscreen prints, 44 x 24″
edition of 15

Limited edition of prints produced during a residency at Open Studio, Toronto. The series is based on historical, family and contemporary photographs of Chinese Cafe culture in Western Canada. The Taoist system of ‘the five energies’: wood, fire, earth, metal, water and it’s corresponding colours influenced the aesthetics of the series. This work was originally commissioned for the touring exhibition and publication, Them = Us (1998-2000), produced by the Harmony Movement, Toronto. This exhibition toured over four dozen venues.
