鹹水埠溫哥華/咸水埠温哥华/Haam Sui Fow Wun Goh Wah
July 13 to September 23, 2018
OCCUPYING CHINATOWN is Paul Wong’s year-long artist residency at the Dr. Sun Yat- Sen Classical Chinese Garden that launched in Spring 2018. Wong will be creating a series of multidisciplinary artworks based on 700 letters in Chinese sent by 90 writers to his mother Suk-Fong Wong.
This residency will evoke memories and loss for the generations of Chinese-Canadians who built a community within a segregated Chinatown. OCCUPYING CHINATOWN throughout the seasons will feature collaborative contemporary works of art with various artists, and will engage visitors and community with diverse programming, workshops, performances, events, and a book.
The first new site-specific work to be created as part of this residency is 鹹水埠溫哥華/咸水埠温哥华/Haam Sui Fow Wun Goh Wah (Saltwater City-Vancouver). These two text pieces acknowledge Chinatown’s Toisanese settlers, and are presented at the Garden: one “wooden” and the other neon.
In addition, there is an exhibition of LAIWAN’s film Movement for Two Grannies: Five Variations in the Scholar’s Study. This piece features two Chinese grannies engaged in a moment of intimate and affectionate friendship. Paul Wong has been creating daring work for over 40 years, pushing the boundaries of conventional cultural stereotypes and art.
OCCUPYING CHINATOWN is a public art project commissioned by the City of Vancouver Public Art Program in partnership with the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden. With support from The Audain Foundation.

#cover #georgiastraight #art #red @audainartmuseum “Paul Wong’s Cover features at the Audain Gallery’s summer Pop! show.
Look beyond the Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol works at the new show at Whistler’s Audain Gallery, and you’ll see the Georgia Straight featured in prominent pop-style repetition.

In the Canada Goes Pop portion of the exhibit, which runs till September 17, Paul Wong’s 2011 work Cover features a series of four silkscreened prints on newsprint showing the multimedia artist’s face on the cover of the Straight.

The 2011 cover was to celebrate Wong’s work being featured in Summer Live, a massive festival in Stanley Park to celebrate Vancouver’s 125th anniversary. “

Co-produced with the frank theatre company
The world premiere of Lesley Ewen’s new Play

A love story. A ghost story. A ritual for release.
A Vancouver artist attends the opening night of his career retrospective. Unbeknownst to gallery-goers, his past has returned to haunt him.  What if what we thought we knew about our lives proved to be less than true? And how can we know the truth if the one creating it keeps it in camera, hidden?
Two beautifully young men, off in radically different directions, become entwined with the untimely death of a stranger, which seals their fate; Camera Obscura (hungry ghosts) is an exciting new contemporary play inspired by Governor General Award winning, multimedia artist, Paul Wong*. His life and radical work provide a jumping off point for playwright and director Lesley Ewen to contemplate the act of creation as both a way of coping with despair and of telling lies. Mixing truth and fiction she spins out a world of multiple realities that re-views a double tragedy in the hope of absolution and understanding.
Actors Jeff Ho, Julien Galipeau and Braiden Houle bring the story to life with passion, intelligence and a brash sense of humour. The renowned design team, Sammy Chien, Khan Lee, Stefan Smulovitz, James Proudfoot and Hannah Case, have created an elegantly rich, multidimensional environment within which to tell this heartfelt, funny and deeply intense tale of Love and Redemption.

SO ARE YOU (1995) 28 min. Video will be featured in DECADEnce exhibition @queerarts June 16-27, 2018. “Paul Wong’s SO ARE YOU looks into the mirror of cultural stereotypes, challenging us to consider how stereotypes come to shape our understanding of the world, and perpetuate racism and sexism. [...]
Mobilising painful stereotypes and retelling the racist jokes by which privilege asserts itself, So Are You is without question “politically incorrect” if by this we are to include representations which repeat racist and sexist stereotypes. While many viewers question the effectiveness of Wong’s strategy in that the stereotypes and jokes reappear without any direct comment, it is paradoxically an example of the kind of work most quickly dismissed as “pc” (politically correct) – media which challenges the viewers, particularly middle class white viewers, to acknowledge and confront internalised racism, classism and sexism.”
